Sally-Alice Thompson, a pillar of the peace movement and very near the age of 101, passed away peacefully Thursday at 10:28am. Many dear friends would have liked to be there, but, at her request, only a tiny group of friends and family were with her at the time. 2 adopted teen grandchildren were present together outside her apartment door in their own self-organized vigil.
Sally-Alice was strong and courageous, and she lived life on her own terms right up to her last minute on this side of the bridge. Many have voiced this week that they have no doubt she will find peace and joy on the other side of that bridge.
Sally-Alice was a truly beautiful soul, as all who knew her could easily see. She had a special interest in children and had participated in many efforts to help children worldwide (Nicaragua, Turkmenistan, China, Gaza, and New Mexico to name a few). She had a big heart and welcomed many people into her family. Quite a few of us are adopted sons, daughters and grandchildren of Sally-Alice.
She was a veteran and was very active in Albuquerque Veterans for Peace. She also was very active in the Progressive Democrats of Albuquerque. She especially was a key force for good at the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice. She had been active at the Peace Center for about 40 years, and she was a strong voice these last 2 years for continuing the Peace Center's mission to organize for justice and world peace.
Very many of us worldwide will have better lives because of her and owe a great debt to Sally-Alice.
