The Native Health Initiative is a partnership to address inequities in health through loving service that began with a community meeting in North Carolina in 2005, where health professions students and Tribal leaders sat together to design the partnership. One of the unique features of the partnership has been our Summer Health Justice Internships, which bring health professions students to Indigenous communities to work with Tribal leaders on health projects. Loving service, not money, funds this and all of NHI's work. NHI is driven by four principles:

  • 1) educating future health professional care providers on the health issues and disparaties facing the American Indian population through a holistic model of medicine;

  • 2) providing concrete, sustainable benefits to the communities involved through tribe-directed projects;

  • 3) supporting students and host communities to engage in meaningful cultural exchange, beyond culural compentency, and;

  • 4) empowering American Indian youth through mentorship and leadership training.

In 2008, NHI-NM was started, and we have primarily focused on youth empowerment in these last 8 months. We are always looking for students, community members, organizations, and tribal communities who want to get involved, including internships during the school year and our summer internships.
