Report back from the border

The Migrant Resource Center in Agua Prieta, Sonora, serves migrants recently deported from the USA. The Resource Center offers informational services, food and clothing, temporary housing, and discounted bus fare home. While we were there migrants shared their wealth of information about crossing the border, such as the different kinds of fences encountered, and the appropriate color of clothing to wear, depending on the areas one is trying to cross. Several people attest that the economy in their region of Mexico is much worse than in the USA so they continue to risk crossing the border.

They were very appreciative of the warm clothing, socks, and jackets we distributed. Thanks to all of you who donated for this trip! In five days we worked nine shifts at the center, took part in a weekly vigil remembering migrants who have died crossing the desert/mountains, attended a bi-national Human Rights Day march put together by Border Action in Douglas calling for immigration reform and immigrant rights, and enjoyed a posada dinner honoring the many volunteers who keep the center open.

Please see our January calendar.
