Report from Afghanistan: In the Midst of War, Voices for Peace: Peace activist, author and poet, David Smith-Ferri, will report on recent Voices for Creative Nonviolence delegations to Afghanistan. Smith-Ferri will describe his encounters with a wide range of Afghan people. He will highlight the Afghan Youth Peace Volunteers, a remarkable group of young Afghans who are risking their lives by calling for nonviolence and reconciliation. In addition, Smith-Ferri will outline the conditions that gave rise to the Taliban movement, the reasons for the US military presence in Afghanistan, and the prospects for peace. Farm-to-Restaurant Albuquerque: Making It Happen, a recently completed research project for the Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG) Agriculture Collaborative, will be presented by Lora Roberts Logan at MRCOG Offices (809 Copper Ave NW - Albuquerque). The presentation will cover: case studies illustrating both successful and struggling farm-to-restaurant programs; survey and interview analysis; opportunities, challenges and benefits of farm-to-restaurant programs; and finally, a set of recommendations and next steps for how the MRCOG, and/or other entities, might expand farm-to-restaurant activities in Albuquerque. There will be 30-45 minutes following the presentation for Q&A regarding the project and open discussion around the topic. 3rd Annual César Chávez Day of Service and Learning at La Plazita Gardens (Bernalillo County Open Space) in Albuquerque's South Valley. Students will participate in a variety of hands-on learning activities such as planting seeds and trees, creation of worm compost bins, landscaping, tour of the greenhouse, and painting of a mural. Teachers will also be provided a curriculum to use prior to the service day, to teach their students about the life and legacy of César Chávez.
