A public meeting about radioactive, toxic and hazardous pollutants from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) impacting Santa Fe's drinking water will take place in the Jemez Room at Santa Fe Community College (Santa Fe). The meeting will discuss the independent peer review of available information by ChemRisk (hired by the Buckman Direct Diversion Project Board). IVAW National Strategy Retreat is being hosted by Iraq Veterans Against the War. About 50 members from around the country will spend the weekend in Albuquerque to attend organizing workshops, practice teamwork, and plan for the future of IVAW. Your monetary contribution will help facilitate this retreat, and we also need volunteers to help with transportation for visiting members, food donations, and general logistical support. An all day public meeting about the Los Alamos Historical Document Retrieval and Assessment (LAHDRA) Project is taking place at the Ohkay Owingeh Casino Hotel Conference Center. This meeting is in response to a request by Las Mujeres Hablan, and is being hosted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The LAHDRA Project Team (initiated in 1999) has reviewed over 40,000 boxes of documents, reports and microfiche in order to compile the most complete historical record of releases of pollutants from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to people located beyond the boundaries of the nuclear weapons facility. The meeting will focus on the draft final report for the Project, which was issued last June. There will be discussion groups about explosives testing, the release of chemicals and specific radionuclides, such as plutonium, uranium, beryllium, and tritium, over the past 67 years, and the 1945 Trinity Test, which was the dropping of the first atomic bomb on New Mexico. Riofest Environmental Film Festival will be held at Macey Center (Socorro). Tickets (by mail only - see Web site below) are $25 for full festival pass, $15 for a day pass and $5 for feature film only. The theme for this years festival is "Promoting Solutions". Our feature films are Food, Inc. and The Music Tree. Other films to be shown are Meatrix, Arribada, Chapparri, Going Green, Design a Great Neighborhood, Grandma Builds an Earthship and many others. There will be vendors on hand to help you "Go Green". Films will be shown all day Friday and Saturday. Entries may vary from shorts to full length films. In keeping with Riofest's mission to create awareness and share information, the festival will provide an opportunity for green groups to disseminate information and display products that promote environmental solutions.
