Celebrate the life of Maurice Weisberg, M.D, with food, music and remembrance. The Rio Grande is now supplying drinking water to Albuquerque and will soon be supplying Santa Fe as well. Maurice was passionate about how the radioactive pollutants in the river affect everyone, including children and fetuses. A donation to The Institute for Energy and Environmental Research to support Arjun Makhijani's testimony -- concerning the need for more protective standards for rivers -- in NM's upcoming state hearings would be greatly appreciated. For more info on Dr. Makhijani's work: www.ieer.org. You can send your tax-deductible donation to: IEER, 6935 Laurel Ave., Suite 201,Takoma Park, Maryland 20912, or bring it to this event. The Day After Peace charts the remarkable 10-year journey of award-winning filmmaker Jeremy Gilley to establish an annual Peace Day on 21 September. The camera follows Jeremy as he galvanises the countries of the world to recognise an official day of ceasefire and non-violence. But, even after the member states of the UN unanimously adopt Peace Day, the struggle isn't over. As the years pass, there's not a single ceasefire. The voices of the cynics are growing louder - and now Gilley's non-profit organisation, Peace One Day, is in dire financial straits. But he can't let it fail. The Day After Peace is a moving testament to the power of the individual and the perseverance of the human spirit. Information: 505-255-2042 or projectpeacepal@gmail.com .

People Before Profit Film & Lecture Series presents Split Estate (2009, 76 minutes) which explores federal land use policy passed in favor of oil & gas in 2003 and has had repucussions throughout the West. This film documents the effects of oil & gas production in Colorado and North Western New Mexico where individuals and communities are dealing with the destruction of their landbase, polluted wells, sickness, and community disintergration in the face of an industry exempt from the Clean Drinking Water or Clean Air Acts. The Split Estate that this film documents refers to the sub-surface mineral rights that the majority of property owners either do not own, or sell, which are bought by large corporations who then have the right to retrieve those minerals by whatever means they deem fit, be it a flaring rig within 100 feet of your house, a pipe line through your cow field or the constant roll of trucks on a myriad of newly cut roads. With natural gas touted as the new climate change stepping stone due to its carbon neutrality, the pressure is now on to drill the last remaining pristine areas of the country. Here in New Mexico the industry has been rapidly buying leases in San Miguel, Mora, Rio Arriba and Colfax counties. Not only will the Mora, Canadian, Vegas, and Tucumcari Waterbasins be severely affected if this is allowed to go ahead, but the primary agricultural areas of the state will be industrialized and ruined for generations to come. If you care about the West, come to this film and participate in the struggle to promote sustainable alternatives. Guest Speaker: Dr. Fiona Sinclair, Commuunity Activist, Mora County. Information: 505-268-9557.
